My Wings Drawing Process

Heya everyone :) I thought I’d post this very quickly drawn tuto about how I do wings :D

Livio often felt useless, those days before the end. Wandering the corridors with a heavy weight about his shoulders, stinking of guilt and practically sweating shame. Few people knew about his sin — Brad had kept quiet, and Vash even quieter. This was evidenced by how the people on the ship greeted him: cautiously, as one would a queer-faced stranger, as opposed to viciously, as one would have treated a murderer. He would have welcomed the violence were he not so opposed to it, now. Razlo would have laughed himself silly. As it was, Livio cried alone.

I went to Dark Horse’s website, and I now own digital copies of the Trigun Maximum manga. The online manga reader allows me to view the pages at a nice resolution, but I can’t save the images at all or read them offline. Fortunately, I can take screencaps to post anything really significant.

Notably, the translation makes a LOT more sense than the scans I was reading, it’s a lot more CONSISTENT, and from a Vash/Wolfwood shipping standpoint, it is mindblowing.

Seriously. Compare the last two images: The second to last is the scanlation, the last is the official Dark Horse translation. In the scanlation, Wolfwood is just asking Vash why he came here, and Vash makes a weird face and doesn’t answer. Funny, but kinda strange. In the Dark Horse translation, Wolfwood is asking what Vash is doing here, and did he FORGET ABOUT KNIVES? And Vash realizes that he completely forgot in light of the danger Wolfwood is in. THAT makes a lot more sense with the face Vash is making. It makes me think that Dark Horse is the more accurate translation for things like that.

Also, the first image:

Vash: “I wanted to share my tomorrows with him [Wolfwood].”

Completely absent from the scanlation, but it should be pretty obvious that I prefer this version. The official one is MUCH more satisfying.

The next image, Vash is telling Wolfwood “crush him” (Razlo). In the scanlation I read, it was Wolfwood saying he was gonna tear Razlo to pieces, which was fine, except Vash was the one with an open mouth. Again, on the inconsistencies, Dark Horse is making more sense to me. It’s usually minor differences, but it’s refreshing to see some of the confusing parts line up finally!

And the third image, I posted just for fun- The bottom left panel looks like the exact sort of segue a slash writer would use to set up a PWP. Vash is attempting to drag Wolfwood off somewhere secluded, Wolfwood is saying he already knows what Vash wants to show him, and Vash is saying something to the effect of “I know you know, but I want you to come with me anyway! Just go with it.”

Vash: “Let’s take a look, shall we, Wolfwood?” *puts arm around Wolfwood’s shoulder*

Wolfwood: “HEY!! You think I don’t understand?!”

Vash: “Not at all, not at all… I just think it’s worth seeing. That’s all…”

So yeah. No WONDER so many people see something going on between Vash and Wolfwood. If they’ve read the Dark Horse manga, it’s pretty fucking obvious how deep the feelings are between these two. Not saying “OH, IT’S CANON.” I’m just saying that nobody can argue that it’s unreasonable to interpret it in such a way, given that Vash says he wants to spend his future/share his life WITH WOLFWOOD. And his later thoughts “Please God just grant me this one wish.”…

so basically, if he could have JUST ONE WISH, it would be for Wolfwood to stay with him, eh?

Yeah.

Man. I love this manga. And the distinct lack of ANY explicitly declared romance of ANY kind, unlike the anime, puts the Vash/Wolfwood dynamic MUCH higher on the scale in the manga. Basically, it IS the deepest relationship depicted in the entire series, romantic or not. There is no overt het romance in the manga to balance it out, unlike the anime, so it’s all the more striking to me.

Especially coming from a male author, seeing such depth of feelings between the two protagonists (don’t lie to yourself- Wolfwood is EVERY BIT AS MUCH OF A PROTAGONIST AS VASH for the first 10 volumes of Trigun Maximum) is really admirable, and I LOVE IT TO BITS.
